PageMaker 6.5 Install Notes
Typical Ranting by Weave
I bet this one will be a bear. PageMaker loves Postscript files. ATM font
manager ain't too kosher on NT apparently. Convert to TrueType or fight
with ATM font manager. We shall see...

Installation Diary and Observations
- Trying a test install. Adding every component except ODBC and Quicktime.
Setup claims it'll take 67 megs.
- Hmm, Acrobat got installed. Don't remember that in check list.
(We don't need it, it's packaged in a separate sysdiff file).
- Ah, never mind. It's the distiller, not the reader. Still, we'll
have to test whether this can install or is dependent on installing
the acrobat reader sysdiff file we made before.
- Sigh, it didn't create program group icons during the install.
- Changing any defaults as user causing an error at exit when it tries
to save the defaults file.
- Acrobat distiller refuses to start at all.
- Registry Key PM65Defaults may be modifiable so it points to F:\
- Changing default drive in shortcut seems to be enough to get file open
and save boxes to default to F:\
- The reg .txt file in pagemaker directory contains registry entries to
replace missing ones in the registry. The key (no pun intended) here is
"missing." To change the PM65Defaults key, you actually need to modify the
registry itself. This should be done right after install, before sysdiff.
Also, change it in the .txt file to be safe.
- 16sep98: Spell checking doesn't work. Turns out a file must exist in
pm65/Rsrc/Linguist/Prx/USenglsh named ALDUSN.MSP. If this file doesn't
exist, PM wants to create it. But users don't have rights to that directory.
It *seems* if you create it as an Administrator, then make it r/o, spell
checking works. That complicates install steps of course.. :-(
Installation Steps
- Install a fresh station with netscape and acrobat options set
- Run AUTORUN.EXE on CD
- Choose Custom install
- Install U.S. Dictionaries
- Postscript printer descriptions
- Add all filters (can never have enough!)
- Add all plugins (ditto)
- Install color libraries, Tutorial, Extras, Acrobat distiller
- Do NOT install ODBC and Apple Quicktime
- Install all HP printer descriptions (why not?)
- Start Fonts control panel
- Install New Font, browse to {cdrom}:\pm65\atm40\psfonts and install
all fonts, converting to True Type
- mkdir %systemroot%\profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Pagemaker
- Create a program icon shortcut to pagemaker executable, set current
directory to F:\
- Edit c:\pm65\pm65reg.txt file, set to F:\\PM65.CNF
(I like to edit files from another station to keep down changes to the
local box between sysdiffs)
- regedit HKLM\Software\Adobe\PageMaker65\USENGLSH\PageMaker65\PM65Defaults
to the same path
(Again, I like to do it from another box)
- Run: sysdiff /diff /c:"Pagemaker 6.5" snapshot pm65.sd
- Run Pagemaker, do a spell check to creat ALDUSN.MSP (see above).
Copy this to unattend\replace directory
Commands to put into a batch file for auto-install
sysdiff /apply /m n:\unattend\sysdiff\pm65.sd^M
copy n:\unattend\replace\aldusn.msp c:\pm65\rsrc\linguist\prx\usenglsh^M
