Word Perfect 6.1 Install Notes
Reference Web Sites
Installation Diary and Observations
- SETUPM.EXE is install program, but CORELWPS\SETUP.EXE is a non-graphical
setup program. However, when *I* tried the latter, it looked pretty
graphical to me! :)
- Test install (to test permissions and see if it's doable first) went
well.
- A lot of Preferences icons are dimmed. Probably permissions issues.
- When I set preferences as Administrator, it must have set the pref file
to r/w cause after that, anyone could set them.
- settings are in %systemroot%\wpcset.bif
- Seems like doing a network install would work better. Settings are kept
on a network share.
- Running from a share will have the nice side effect of allowing us to
control concurrent copies to license parameters by limiting number of
users on the share.
- Need to run WordPerfect Admin to set defaults
- Joy, after trying all above, I log in as two separate users, each can
modify the other's defaults... Might be because I told it during install to
install into each user's default win directory. I guess under NT that is
%systemroot%. Hopefully this can be edited with that bpf editor so I don't
have to reinstall..
- Hmm, can't find it... :-(
- Yup, gotta reinstall from scratch on fresh system. grrr... (learned
later that this can be specified by the /pi and /unr switches in
shared/wpc20/sh_sh_.env file)
- OK, worked well this time. Now I have to do another virgin install
in order to get a clean snapshot for station installation. We will also need
to do a batch file to map X: whenever wp is run (grrr...)
- After this install, noted what is installed to local C: drive. Tons of
fonts with .FOT into winnt directory. Probably get indexed correctly in
next reboot, so question is, when do we /diff the snapshot? Before or after
the reboot.
- Did a perfect install, but forgot the launcher batch file that'll
map X: drive... :-( Gotta do it again...
- Rethinking strategy. Going to just install the server part to the
normal \\zuni\nt directory. While I can map a network drive in a batch
file, unmapping is problematic. The /WAIT switch on start is useless since
wpwin.exe is just a temporary launcher itself. It terminates pretty
quickly. This will, of course, require two fresh installs. One to install
the server, the next to do an accurate sysdiff. :(
- Setup switch /AUTO=WORKSTATION /APPS=WP runs unattended install apparently
- Unfortunately, this switch also restarts the computer after install.
- Ooops, another reinstall
- ttf fonts are stored on G: and they don't appear to be available
to any applications, no matter what I do. They show up in the fonts folder,
but not in applications. This was with "install fonts on local machine"
set during server install. Only possible solution is to redo the server
install to NOT install the fonts, then install a client, then manually
install the TTF files to the fonts folder. Then do a new sysdiff. However,
since I've about had it with this (going on for days now), the fonts can
stay unaccessible until someone complains. Otherwise, it'll delay other work
(like pagemaker install) which will cause even more complaints.
Installation Steps
- Run setupm.exe on a station that has never had WP on it before
- Choose Word Perfect Only install
- Choose Network Install
- Change paths from C:\OFFICE to G:\APPS\WPOFFICE
- Set Location of User's Initialization Files to F:\
- Install
- Reboot
- Run WP Admin Program. Change preferences to reasonable values
- Verify file permissions, especially shared\wpcnet\wpcnet.bif
- Read the shared/readme.net doc closely
- Reinstall entire test station to a clean state again
- sysdiff /snap the box
- run setup in G:\APPS\WPOFFICE\shared, install to workstation
- Ignore the reboot prompt (leave it alone for now)
- Create launcher batch files
- Move program icons from Common Start Menu to All Users (in an appropriate
directory, create if necessary)
- sysdiff /diff the box
Commands to put into a batch file for auto-install
