Fire Protection Engineering Technology

This curriculum is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to begin work in many areas of the Fire Protection field and to help solve fire protection and related safety problems in our complex technical society. Technical changes within industry and the increase in the number, variety, type of chemicals, flammable and combustible products, and population densities have accentuated the fire problem. The fire protection engineering technician has a broad scope of occupational opportunities in a variety of areas which include insurance, industry, equipment manufactures, municipal, and state industries.
Fire protection engineering technicians apply their knowledge in a systematic approach to plans review, occupancy inspections for code compliance, fire prevention planning, fire safety and loss prevention programs, fire administration, equipment representation and sales, and fire protection system design. Laboratory work, field inspections, and field trips provide added experiences. The Fire Protection program emphasizes design and application principles.
Delaware Tech is the only community college in the area which offers this engineering technology specialty. Our state-of-the-art facilities include a burn laboratory and a protection systems laboratory which will allow you to put the theoretical knowledge you gain in the classroom to practical use. You'll gain experience with sprinkler, alarm and detection equipment and learn about smoke control and various types of fires. Area companies use Delaware Tech's facilities to test and certify products in order to meet national standards. Certificates are offered in addition to the A.A.S. Degree , for selected technical courses in the curriculum.
You can enroll in the Fire Protection Engineering Technology Program on either a full-time or a part-time basis. The length of time required to complete an Associate Degree depends on the number of courses you take each semester. Some students may need refresher courses at the basic or developmental level; others may receive transfer credit or credit for work experience.
Delaware Tech operates on a semester system with new sessions beginning in late August and mid-January, plus summer sessions beginning at the end of May and in mid-June. You can start taking courses any semester or summer session; however, all technical courses may not be offered every session. Counselors and advisors are available to assist you with scheduling of your courses.

Technical Courses
- FET-111 Introduction to Fire Protection studies the nation's fire experience with an overview of the technology and techniques used to protect people and property.
- FET-112 Fire Protection Systems concentrates on the fire protection equipment which can be installed in a building to protect both the occupants and the property from unwanted fires.
- FET-120 Introduction to Fire Protection Design covers the drawing and reading of blueprints with the appropriate symbols used for fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and special fire extinguishing systems.
- FET-150 Water Supply Analysis teaches the analysis of the adequacy of water supply for fire protection; and demonstrates the theories of water movement in pipes, pumps and hoses.
- FET-160 Codes and Standards covers fire prevention regulations, the Life Safety Code and building codes, and discusses fire protection standards and their role in safeguarding people and property.
- FET-200 Industrial Fire Hazards studies fire hazards, causes and engineered prevention technologies within the industrial environment.
- FET-201 Loss Control Procedures covers the detection, correction and monitoring of unsafe acts and conditions; and discusses loss prevention activities in vehicle operations, workmen's' compensation issues and other non-fire related potential loss situations.
- FET-210 Presentation Techniques teaches educational methodologies along with theories of human motivation and learning.
- FET-221 Fire Protection Design I uses computer-aided drawing and drafting to prepare working drawings which comply with current codes and standards for fire sprinkler systems.
- FET-222 Fire Protection Design II utilizes computer-aided drafting to prepare working drawings of special hazard protection, fire detection, and fire alarm systems.
- FET-230 Fire Rated Building Design covers the protection of the modern building and its occupants from the design phase through the final inspection, and discusses the testing of building materials for fire ratings.
- FET-261 Inspections teaches the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effective inspections.
