Materials Testing Laboratory and Metallurgy Laboratory
Testing Equipment | Metallurgy Lab Equipment

The Materials Testing Lab is utilized for experiments related to the strength and composition of various materials.  This testing equipment is the most commercially current equipment available for non-destructive and destructive testing. The lab is utilized in a number of courses which include Strength of Materials and Material Science.

Through a series of experiments, the basic principles in the area of strength and mechanics of materials are demonstrated to the students.

The lab also allows the student to conduct metallurgical testing on a wide variety of materials, ranging from steel alloys to iron, aluminum, and copper based alloys. These tests give the student the hands-on experience in determining the various properties of these materials.

Testing Equipment:

Satec Unidrive Tensile Tester - Model 50UD

Satec Universal Testing Machine - Model 200HVP

Satec Universal Testing Machine - Model 120 HV

Satec Compression Tester - Model 200HVP

Satec Fatigue Tester - Model SF-1U

Tinius Olsen Torsion Tester

Tinius Olsen Impact Tester

Rockwell Hardness Tester

Micromet Micro Hardness Tester

Brinell Hardness Tester

The Metallurgy lab is equipped with the following equipment:

Metallurgical Cut off machine

Rough grinding Station

3 Fine Grinding Stations

6 Polishing Stations

Pneumatic Mounting Press

Nikon Metallurgical Imaging System

Basic Heat Treating Facilities

Torsion Testing
Tinius Olsen Torsion Tester
Torsion Testing Machine is designed for conducting Torsion tests on various materials. This equipment is used to test the mechanical properties of specimen with and determine the shear modulus and shear stress and strain. A tropometer is used to measure the amount of twist during the test.

Tensile/Compression Impact Testers
This equipment is used to measure the mechanical properties various materials under a tensile or compression load. The properties that can be determined are Young's modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, ductility, modulus of resilience and toughness. Our lab can determine these properties of a material using a wide range of testing equipment shown below.
